In August 2021, when the Taliban reclaimed Afghanistan after the American withdrawal, girls were banned from secondary education. As reported by UNICEF, the “education system [in Afghanistan] has been devastated by more than three decades of sustained conflict.

“For many of the country’s children, completing primary school remains a distant dream, especially in rural areas and for girls.”

Shaheda, today, a Bard College grad
In December 2022, the Taliban added to the despair by prohibiting university education for girls, eliciting protests and international criticism. Dr. Ronald Bradley, who has worked with Conscience International in Lebanon and Iraq, taught at the SOLA School in Afghanistan for one year where he mentored a number of students. One of the brightest was Shaheda, 13, in 2014 (pictured with Dr. Bradley in her mandatory hijab). At right is Shaheda today, proudly wearing her graduation robe and displaying her diploma as a Bard College graduate in the USA, 2021. Conscience International, through donor contributions, helped Shaheda reach for her goals away from suppression. She is now studying for her Master’s degree in America.
