The Day a Town Disappeared in Venezuela

On October 9, 2022, some 30 miles south of Caracas, Venezuela, the town of Las Tejerias virtually vanished— buried in mud, debris, and chaos.

People, houses, cars, trees-- and shops that were stocked and ready to finally reopen post coronavirus pandemic, were swept away when a river overflowed in record-setting rainfall, taking nearly 100 lives and destroying some 400 buildings. The deluge followed Hurricane Julia that had just passed through Las Tejerias the day before, leaving destruction on top of destruction. The mudslide was one disaster too many. But Conscience International, which has been conducting feeding programs in Venezuela since 2020, is working in local partnership to bring hope to surviving families in Las Tejerias, in a country deprived of so much.
