An American in Ukraine-- A Day in the Life of a Conscience International Volunteer

Since the war in Ukraine began, Conscience International teams have been in Romania and Ukraine using feet, hands, and hearts, serving and comforting women and children who have been forced to flee the battles that have left husbands and fathers behind to fight for their homeland.  One of our young volunteers has been in Romania and Ukraine for nearly three months, working compassionately from morning until night, helping to ease the agony of families now separated from homes and loved ones and facing an uncertain future. This is his latest report of how your donations are helping to  feed, shelter, and sustain the lives of hundreds of refugees every day.

"Every day we wake up early and find two or three trucks have arrived full of supplies that we unload and organize.  Food that needs to stay cool is stored in a church basement.  Everything else –  pasta, flour, rice, sugar, salt, water, and more— goes into huge containers.  Special orders go on separate pallets.

“By 11:00 AM empty vans arrive. We pack them full of products to be delivered by convoy and distributed to the most critical areas inside Ukraine. At noon, we start filling bags for refugees, enough to last one family for a week. We try to fill 500 packets a day, stored inside the church and ready for refugees the next day who begin to line up by 9:00 AM. There are as many as 700 people who wait in line each day. Ladies from the church keep everything organized, helping with forms and screening each person to avoid duplication of the in-demand bags.

“Most of the refugees are women with children, many with babies and other women who are pregnant. Fortunately, we have a lot of baby supplies so we pack the waiting cars full.  About twice a week we give away items like clothes and shoes.  Local people are helping by bringing whatever they can to donate to the refugees. This requires more organizing, but we have set up a system that makes it easier.

“Then comes the end of a long day.  We get up the next morning and do it all over again."

Conscience International continues to send rotating teams to Romania and Ukraine.  We will stay there to provide support to the most vulnerable for as long as we are able. Can you help?
