PRAY THAT YOUR FLIGHT BE NOT IN WINTER!

Women and children fleeing Ukraine for safety and help in Romania

In Ukraine, as always in war, the worst effects fall on women and children. The New Testament warns of future conflicts in very stark terms: “Woe to women who are with child or nursing in those days. Pray that your flight be not in winter!”

Within days of the Russian attack on Ukraine, Dr. James Jennings of Conscience International led a relief team to Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova. Despite the freezing cold, the group linked up with local partners in Romania and Ukraine to provide aid to refugees-- most of whom were women and children-- at the main crossing points on the Ukraine border and also by truck convoy to some of the towns inside Ukraine still suffering bombardment.

The group’s objective was to find ways to help refugees seeking safety in Romania, and if possible, to aid people still in Ukraine facing the ongoing conflict.

The team helped establish refugee reception centers in three localities at border posts on the Ukraine and Moldovan frontiers. They sponsored truckloads of relief supplies going into Ukraine from Romania and arranged a delivery of blankets and food from Istanbul, Turkey. On March 25 Conscience International’s Robert Smucker joined a convoy of trucks delivering food, baby products, bedding, and winter clothing to cities in central and western Ukraine while rockets flew overhead.

At Galati, a large city on the Danube River in Romania, Conscience International joined a group receiving thousands of refugees coming by ferry from the region of Odessa. One of the team’s functions was to assist the transfer of children from Ukraine to places of safety in Galati.

The region’s hospitals and clinics have agreed to welcome Conscience International’s volunteer medical teams, and a women’s health center is under consideration. According to Dr. Jennings, “Our work in the war zone is just beginning.”
