In Chimaltenango, some 35 miles west of Guatemala City, Conscience International Program Director for Latin America, Dr. Jurguen Kiehnle, is partnering with "Mi Especial Tesoro" (My special treasure), an NGO that is providing education to 150 low-income children. Most of them are Kaqchikel or K'iche (two Mayan ethnic groups).
During Covid-19 their needs, like so many others, have increased exponentially. Now Conscience International and Mi Especial Tesoro are networking, combining efforts to increase delivery of food bags and basic hygiene supplies to local residents. To begin, 60 families have already been served.
But there is a larger need. Unlike American schools where students can continue their education on-line, schools in Chimaltenango must remain closed. There is no easy access to hygiene supplies and protective equipment, and students from the local school do not have access to a computer or internet, so there are no online classes. To continue their education, teachers have to organize actual, in person, meetings to monitor the progress of their students.
Conscience International is helping to support education in low-income populations by providing food so children won’t drop out of school in order to seek money/ food for their family. So it is critical that we offer protective supplies to the teachers so they can keep teaching.
Can you help? Conscience International’s medical team, at personal risk, is in Guatemala for the ‘long-haul.’ But we can only stay with your help. Please consider a donation in any amount. 100% of all tax-deductible donations go directly to help the people.
