Conscience International is working side by side with local government agencies and colleges in Guatemala, partnering in community development programs to train leaders for improved life-sustaining conditions. “Our hope is to raise awareness of the needs in all their industries and invite American leaders in their fields of expertise to participate in developing community leaders,” says Angelo Velis, Conscience International’s Community Development Director for Guatemala.

MAGA, (The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food) has been most influential in allowing access to their community aid programs where farmers are retrained to learn more modern and efficient farming practices. “Most farmers cannot afford to hire help and are limited physically in the initial labor of repurposing their land for new crops.  We need volunteer work teams to help build structures and irrigation systems, retaining walls, storage facilities, and to supply better tools for the work. Higher yields in their crops will help feed their children, combat malnutrition, and send their children to school.”
