What's Happening Now

Helping others comes naturally to Kyle Beckler. Just before his 22^nd birthday in 2022, he hopped on an airplane in Alaska, where he works the season as a ski patroller (often aiding those in trouble on the slopes) and flew thousands of miles through many airports to get to Romania. There he joined other Conscience International volunteers supporting Ukraine refugees who were fleeing a homeland war with Russia. He made three months-long trips there between 2022 and 2024, most inside Ukraine, delivering aid to the elderly and others who could not escape. “I’m ready to go anywhere. Eager to help,” Kyle said. Here is his story of how his experience has impacted his own life while giving hope and help to so many in crisis.

Creation of the Gail V. Anderson Sr., MD Training Fund in Emergency Medicine—the first emergency medicine academic program for doctors and nurses in Congo, and in recognition of the late Dr. Anderson, one of the “fathers” of emergency medicine in the United States. 

Author Joseph Conrad wrote Heart of Darkness in 1899 to describe in fiction his experiences working on a riverboat on the Congo River.  The savage practices he recorded took place not just among natives but often among Europeans traders as well.  What he wrote was frightening and gruesome— including placing severed heads of enemies on fence posts all around a compound to scare off attacks.

The very definition of charity is our willingness to engage in a heartfelt way with people who are suffering, either from dire poverty and need, or accidents, war, and natural disasters.  Even if they are people you’ll never meet, there is a tangible benefit from helping that belongs to you personally.  That is the universal sentiment of men and women throughout history who have engaged directly in humane action.  They report a positive uplift, a feeling of being fully human and meaningfully alive.
